Enjoy Life, Enjoy God

The days are upon us once again when our youth head off to school: pre-school, grammar school, and college. I wonder how the curriculum would be adjusted if it reflected a Christ-centered perspective?

To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand vision and dreams of all kinds.
- Daniel 1:17 TNIV

At that time, Babylon was #1. It had the best food, the best health care, the best educational system. The best, you hear me? But when the King of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar "recruits" the four young Jews into his court, Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, he demanded also that they have the best, the Babylonian best! Yet the four chose a different, a God-centered diet and curriculum. How did it all end? "In every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king questioned them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters in his whole kingdom." (1:20)

So what? There's nothing wrong with good food and great schools, even in Babylon. However, there is also no substitute for a Christ-centered diet and education. To graduate magna cum laude with a Harvard degree is no substitute for a heart and mind that knows the chief end of a human life is to "Glorify God and enjoy him forever." It makes all the difference. It did for those four in Babylon thousands of years ago, it does so today for all of us as well. That's something Harvard will not teach us; as Christ-followers, we are responsible ourselves for graduating honors in God's curriculum.
