LIPS

December 3, 2013

One of the cautions the scriptures urge upon us regards our speech, the words we inflict upon others.  Some of us would do well to hear this counsel.

Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watching over the door of my lips.  Do no let me heart be drawn to what is evil so that I take part in wicked deeds along with those who are evil doers; do not let me eat of their delicacies.
                                             --Psalm 141:3,4 TNIV

Notice that this is the Psalmist's prayer.  He asks for God's assistance, yet realizes it summons from him some self-control.  "Let a righteous man strike--that is a kindness..." (v. 5)

Some of us would do well to heed this counsel of the ages.  In this land we are entitled to free speech, but we need not abuse others with this civil right.  "My eyes are fixed on you," (v. 8) prays the Psalmist.

Joyfully,
