ODD WORDS

November 19, 2013

Jesus says some odd words, strange sayings, things that don't fit many of our pictures of Jesus.  Maybe our pictures are wrong.

He said to another man, "Follow me."  But he replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."  Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."
Still another man said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go back and say goodby to my family."  Jesus replied, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."
                                              --Luke 9:59-62 TNIV

Jesus' focus on the family may be quite different than ours.  Two straightforward cases of people who use their family obligations as a reason to delay following Jesus.  And Jesus' odd words say, "No excuse."

Hmmm.  I wonder how we use family priorities, even as if God wants us to do that, to deter us from following the Jesus way?

Joyfully,
