"I"

July 22, 2009

Christians need beware of "I." To be a Christian is to be Christ-centered. However, "I" seems all so common.

He must become greater; I must become less.
-John 3:30 TNIV

John the Baptist tells his followers, that he will diminish, and Christ must increase. What a strange, foreign word to a culture of self-actualization and self-fulfillment. Christian thinking risks making a cult of self-fulfillment; theologies seduce us to join the cult of "I." I/Self is a huge word in Christian books, teaching, and it's mistaken, I'm convinced.

Another prayer excerpt from The Valley of Vision:
Teach me that Christ cannot be the way if I am the end,
that he cannot be the Redeemer if I am my own savior,
that there can be no true union with him while the creature has my heart,
that faith accepts him as Redeemer and Lord or not at all.
Joyfully,
