TWO-SIDED COIN

October 1, 2009

The common expression goes, "like two sides of a coin." The yin and yang, the push and the pull. Opposing polarities. Reality often comes to us in pairs.

Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness.
- Romans 11:22 TNIV

The two-sidedness of God is kindness and sternness. It's who God is as God relates to us. Paul speaks of kindness, yet kindness is extended with a purpose unto our faithfulness. Kindness is not unto our self-indulgence. But also sternness. Sternness summons us to accountability.
There's two sides to this coin, as in many things in our world. It is dishonest to wallow in a world, no matter how much it may please us, of one-sided coins. There's two-sided coins. Thank God for kindness but it is not a license to indulgence, but a summons to faithfulness.
Joyfully,
