The first and last letters of the alphabet. But the expression, "A to Z," is not only about first and last, but also about all in between.

"I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty."
- Revelation 1:8 TNIV

Primary announcement and theme: God. God is in charge. When all about John and the early church seems to be otherwise, everything is falling apart, and persecution and suffering increasingly mark the cost of discipleship, the Revelation begins with God. "Caesar, is not in charge," and all the Caesars until today, but "The Lord Almighty is in charge!" That is a great comfort during fearful, pressure-packed days.

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. "I am the first and the last," says the Lord God. "But not only that, but everything in between, everything, from A to Z. I am the Lord God, even in what you face today!"
