WORD IS TRUTH

January 18, 2010

The widow of Zarephath heard prophets, holy men speak before. She had less and less use for them. They ranted and raved, just words.

Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth."

Elijah, the prophet, speaks a word of warning to King Ahab, but rather than heed the word, Ahab decides to fight back, not just against Elijah, but God. Elijah goes into hiding until he comes to the widow of Zarephath who provides for Elijah. Yet in the course of it all she learns that the words this religious, holy man speaks are the truth. Miraculously, Elijah's words saves her son's life. Elijah is not your run-of-the-mill holy man or prophet. His word is truth.

If the widow of Zarephath was overwhelmed by verbose religious spokesperson's, how much more are we faced with information overload, and are at risk of hearing it all as "blah, blah." Elijah couldn't tweet or blast email daily devotionals. He merely spoke a word, and the people had to grapple with it--take it or leave it. Yet his word was truth. Some things don't change--look for the truth, pleasant or not, and like the widow, live accordingly. Truth is the issue.
Joyfully,
