Enjoy Life, Enjoy God

In the movie, "Rudy," the wannabe Notre Dame football player consults a priest in his quest. The priest tells Rudy, "In my experience I've learned that God is God, and I'm not." I write "Enjoy Life, Enjoy God," to give us a word of encouragement, sometimes a kick in the rear-end, but all toward to the POSITIVE goal of encouraging our discipleship. Then I come to the Book of 2 Kings.

But when they went out to bury [Jezebel], they found nothing except her skull, her feet and her hands. They went back and told Jehu, who said, "This is the word of the Lord that he spoke through his servant Elijah.... On the plot of ground at Jezreel dogs will devour Jezebel's flesh."
- 2 Kings 9:35,36 TNIV

"God is God, and I'm not." These stories of wretched people like Ahab and Jezebel, and 2 Kings is full of them--they are pretty hard to turn them into a pick-me-up. But God is God, and back in 1 Kings 18 the saga that leads to dogs devouring Jezebel starts, and it comes to conclusion here in 2 Kings 9. Ahab was no god. Nor was Jezebel.

Perhaps such is an invitation to our humility, to repentance, to summon us to seek Christ's lordship and leadership ever more so, every day. God is God, and I'm not.
