KNOWING OF WHAT YOU ASK

April 21, 2010

Conversations at two levels sometimes happen. Meaning, one person thinks they're talking about one thing, but the other means something quite different. John 4 is an illustration.

"The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life." The woman said to him, "Sir, give this water, so that I may never be thirsty or have to keep coming here to draw water."
--John 4:14,15 NRS

Jesus meets a woman at the well. A woman? Men didn't speak to women in public. A Samaritan? Jews have nothing to do with Samaritans. Yet Jesus enters a conversation with her. She is thirsty, but as the conversation evolves, she shares a thirsty life with Jesus. All she can think of is water to quench her thirst, but Jesus knows she's thirsty for much more than a water itself. But she is only thinking about water. Yet as Jesus persists, the woman begins to get it. Jesus is speaking about a water she knows not, but she's interested.

We can be so immersed in our tangible reality, we miss the bigger realities, like living water. Are you thirsty today? Truth is, our Lord is concerned about both realities--water to drink, and water of life. More to come about this woman & Jesus.
Joyfully,
