Enjoy Life, Enjoy God

FATHER & SON

April 28, 2010

John's Gospel announces mighty acts of God in Jesus, but also, a theological tour de force, most challenging at that!

Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing on his own, but only what he sees the Father doing, for whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise."
--John 5:19 NRS

Notice the inseparable relationship between the Father and the Son. V. 19 starts it. But it goes far beyond:
V. 21: Father raises dead, gives life through Son
V. 22: Father gives power of judgment to the Son
V. 23: Want to honor the Father? Honor the Son
V. 24: To believe the Son is to believe the Father
V. 26: Life comes from the Father through the Son
V. 27: Son given authority of Father
In these short verses, as is true elsewhere, the connection of Jesus as the Son of God, deepens in significance. It proved troubling to the religious leaders of his day, as it does to many today as well. Yet, the connection, Father and Son, cannot be done away.

If we want to draw close to God, it is by drawing close to the Son. The son's name is Jesus.
Joyfully,
