PRESUMPTION

May 13, 2010

Yes, putting our faith in Christ secures us in him. Yet there is a religious presumptuousness that assumes that a vain religious act buys us a magic ticket to God's favor. The religious people of Jesus' day struggled with this, and we still do.

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

"Abraham is our father," they answered. "If you were Abraham's children," said Jesus, "then you would do what Abraham did."
- John 31,32, 39 TNIV

God's grace keeps us going, rejoice in this truth! Yet let us beware of presumption. More than personal religious comfort-- is not your intent to follow Christ? Turning back to The Valley of Vision prayerbook, I'll close with this excerpt cautioning about presumption.
Convince me that I have no peace at death nor hope that I should go to Christ, unless I intend to do his will and have his fullness while I live.
Joyfully,
