KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO

June 7, 2010

Sometimes people say and do profound things, yet in doing so they completely fail to see their true significance.
Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year, spoke up, "You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish....He prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation...to bring them together and make them one." - John 11:49-52 TNIV

The high priest, Caiaphas, was clueless about the words he spoke regarding what to do about Jesus. He was totally wrong! He was totally right! He was right that the death of Jesus would bring people together, that Jesus' sole death was a better strategy to solve their problems than trying to crush out many. However, Caiaphas was all wrong. Jesus' death sentence would not do away with the Jesus problem, but it would overcome Caiaphas' largest problem, his own sin.
On the cross Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." (Luke 23:34) Caiaphas spoke of a death sentence, yet did not comprehend that his hateful act opened life to us all, even himself!
Joyfully,
