DOUBLE ENTENDRE

July 13, 2010

Sometimes we say something but don't understand that it may have a very different meaning than we intended, or were even aware of--a double meaning.

"Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jewish leaders that it would be good if one man died for the people." - John 18:14 TNIV
Caiaphas, the High Priest of the Jews, thought he could solve the "Jesus problem" by killing Jesus, and he so advised. "It would be good if one man died for the people." He knew what he meant, and he certainly did not intend or believe that Jesus' death would save a sinful people, you and me.
He did not know what the implication was of what he said. An enemy of Jesus, in effect, spoke the core of good news about Jesus. Jesus died for our sins. And that is good.
Joyfully,
