SENNACHERIB

October 25, 2010

Sen-KNOCK-a-rib, it's pronounced. He was the king of the most powerful empire of the day, Assyria. And he had his eyes on conquering the people of God.

"On what do you base this confidence of yours? ...On whom do you now rely?.
- Isaiah 36:4,5 NRS

King Sennacherib asks the question above to Hezekiah, the king of the people of God who refuses to surrender to the mighty Assyrian army. The alliance with Egypt crumbled; it had been thought to protect Israel from Assyria. The apathy and rebellion against the Lord came to a head: the people of God now stood alone as Sennacherib demands unconditional surrender. The foe dares the people of God to trust their sham strategies and alliances, and even the enemy asks the prophetic question: on whom do you rely? That's the question, isn't it?

Today you may not be facing the might of the Assyrian army or the ruthless dares of Sennacherib, but the day, nevertheless, begs the question, on whom do you rely?

Joyfully,
