INQUIRY

November 23, 2010

In horse-racing when the results are not sure, or it's suspected that something may not have been strictly by the rules, before the bets are paid, there is an "Officials' Inquiry."  It's just a pause, before going on, sort of like a referee's replay of a questionable call in football.

The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the Lord.

- Joshua 9:14 TNIV

Under the command of God, Israel was to wipe out the inhabitants of the Promised Land. On one occasion, those terrified Canaanites lied to the Israelites which led to a treaty to spare them. It's a big story in Joshua 9. However in the middle of the big story are a few important words: "The Israelites...did not inquire of the Lord." It's there for a reason--for them and for us.

How often do we plunge into decisions, a people who claim to be Christ-centered, yet we fail to inquire of the Lord? Maybe these few words can lead us to a change of practice.

Joyfully,
