COMMISSION-OMISSION

March 20, 2013

The great prayerbook of the church speaks in its classic Prayer of Confession of both our sins of commission, and our sins of omission.

Jesus replied, "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'  All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." God.
                                                      --Matthew 22:37-40 TNIV

We speak of the Ten Commandments and whether we've broken them or not--stealing, coveting, murdering, etc.  Yet it is not simply what we've done as in commission, but what we have omitted, not done.

Notice Jesus' double use of "love."  Love of God, and neighbor.  We may never have murdered, but to fail to love, well, consider Jesus' words.  To fail to love, this omission, is like murdering another person.  That's the point!

Joyfully,
